The Impressive Qualities of 100% Recyclable DuPont™ Tyvek®

Tyvek® high density Polyethylene is 100% recyclable.  Marshall Hinds has always promoted this aspect of Tyvek® as a sustainable commercial printing solution that in use will not negatively impact on the environment.

While big business focuses on recycling, small enterprise and communities go one better and upcycle.
Upcycling, according to Wikipedia  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upcycling, “…is also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling.”

Upcycling is what brought Mignon Hattingh to offices of Marshall Hinds, Cape Town.  Mignon got involved with the MIND OVER MATTER PROJECT in 2016 when the Department of Arts, Culture and Sport became a sponsor.

Mignon explained that the MIND OVER MATTER PROJECT was started in October 2007 by Celestine Smith with the help of her friends to improve the lives of the disabled, like herself. They started with a group of 10 disabled people and by 2018 the number grew to 30 people of which 7 people earn an income out of the project.

In the first years of operation the group raised funds by creating products out of waste materials that were collected in the surrounding community.  The products created were in turn sold and this income generation kept the doors of the project open until the first funding was provided by the Overberg District Municipality in 2009.

When the Department of Arts, Culture and Sport and became involved in 2016, Mignon was tasked to start and teach the skills needed to make paper jewellery.  Three years later, when Mignon started looking for a material that would create a different texture to the beads and jewellery,  Tyvek® was the obvious choice.

Mignon left the office of Marshall Hinds no less than an hour later clutching a motley array of disused Tyvek® sheets, strips and some old printed brochures that were previously of no use to anyone.

This is where the MIND OVER MATTER PROJECT  took over and did what they are really good at.  They created an array of beads that totally transformed the Tyvek® into beautiful, beads and necklaces that will be sold to provide a livelihood for a group of people who otherwise would not be able to sustain themselves.

Tyvek® has many impressive qualities…

The MIND OVER MATTER PROJECT has now joined the ranks of famous and successful artists for whom Tyvek® is the substrate of choice.
